Vietnam becomes an “auto nation”
From 2019 VinFast will build SUVs and sedans for the Vietnam market and plan to export in future. thyssenkrupp System Engineering will supply the assembly line for the 4-cylinder engine. Construction began in November 2018.
Vietnam is witnessing the birth of a new auto manufacturer. VinFast is planning to produce an SUV and a sedan at a new plant in the northern Vietnamese city of Haiphong from 2019. Both models were presented to the public for the first time at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. VinFast is part of the VinGroup, the country’s largest privately owned company. thyssenkrupp System Engineering is acting as a strategic partner to VinFast in its ambitious project and will engineer, design, manufacture and install the entire assembly line for the 4-cylinder engine and take it into production. The order has a total value in the two-digit million euro range.
High availability and durability at low operating costs
“The ambitious timetable and the opportunity to integrate our own ideas to a greater extent than with established OEMs was a major challenge. In collaboration with VinFast and their planning partner AVL we ultimately succeeded in finding solutions to ensure high availability and durability of the assembly processes at minimized operating costs.”
Construction of the assembly line began in November 2018 and the first engines are expected to be produced at the end of February 2019. VinFast will have the capacity to produce 250,000 units per year in the first phase.. The Vietnamese company is aiming to become the largest auto manufacturer in Southeast Asia.
International organization makes for a competitive advantage
System Engineering will benefit from its global organization in realizing the order. “The project as a whole will be managed from Bremen, where various automatic stations and the transport systems will be produced,” says Ralf Mehldau. “The cylinder head line and a further 5 automatic stations are being handled by our colleagues from India, while other foreign colleagues are responsible for the manual workstations.” And the Service business unit at Industrial Solutions also made an important contribution: “Business Unit Service helped us find Vietnamese partners to build the line.” System Engineering’s new data recording and collection system will also be used for the first time as a support system.
